Refurbished in 2007, this small community local is one of a number that can still be found on Highland Road.

Now an up and coming live music and comedy venue, the Alma seems set to experience a long-awaited resurgence.

JOYBOY1970 BLACK CAT COMEDY CLUB SUNDAY 27TH APRIL 2008
by JOYBOY1970 28/04/2008 21:05:33
On arrival in the pub at about 8pm I had my doubts, as it seemed really quiet in the pub. But the Raglan Rooms at the back of the pub was almost full up with about 100 people waiting for the comedy to start. The first act Jim Grant from Eastbourne started off the evening well & got involved with audience. The second act Dan Moore was a local Portsmouth lad with some interesting material and with a bit of a local following. The third act Adam Smith from Brighton had a real blasé attitude and he proved very popular with the audience. The main act Andrew Lawrence was a real treat and really made the night for me. He must have been on the stage for nearly hour, but he held the attention of the audience with his fast pace comedy & his multiple impressions, the best being of his doctor prescribing him anti-depressants for a bruised foot! & Cheryl from Girls Aloud being interviewed about her career. For tickets £5 in advance & £6 on the door you really can’t go far wrong here.
